Opiate Addiction

opiate addictionOpiate addiction is a disorder in the brain’s central nervous system that is caused by the continuous intake of opiates.  The nerve cells in an addict’s brain will cease to work normally after prolonged opiate use.  When an individual has an opiate addiction, their body will stop making endorphins due to all the opiates it is receiving instead.  When a body has these opiates it will develop a physical dependency for more external supplies of the chosen drug.

Opiate addiction can also become harmful when the individual suddenly ceases use of the drug.  It has become a major health issue around the United States over the past few years. Substance addiction has major health concerns and is very costly when it comes down to treatment costs that reaches into billions of dollars a year throughout the United States.

Variety of Reasons Opiate Addiction Occurs

Opiate addiction occurs for a variety of reasons, but two of the most common reasons occur:
1. When an individual is prescribed opiate pain relievers by their physicians to manage chronic pain, such as cancer victims or post-surgery patients. Often, these individual develop high tolerance levels and will increase the dosage themselves and this often results in addiction.

2. When an individual abuses opiates because they like the high feeling it gives them. As abuse continues for prolonged periods of time, tolerance increases, and the abuser will take more of the drug to produce the desired euphoria. This can lead to severe addiction or even death.
